Monologue
"Monologue" was never intended to be a performance piece, and it is part of my repertoire today only because I have a habit of yielding to happy accident.
I had just danced a performance of "The Futility of the Gesture of Futility", and realized that the other dancers needed time to change their costumes for the next piece. So, I took off the over-dress, grabbed a chair from the wings, and went back onstage. I stayed there for the better part of five minutes, talking about dance, modern dance, post modern dance, and performance art, as I sat in, stood on, leaned against, and interacted with, the chair. The result was quite sculptural, the ad-libbed monologue was well-received, and the dancers were able to change and catch their breath.....synergy!
"Monologue" remains in the repertoire, and the text has not been written down, retaining its freshness and its relevance. |
