Master classes in contemporary dance |
|
A contemporary dance master class with Pamela Lydon is designed to challenge the dancer both physically and mentally. The emphasis is on independence of movement, thinking quickly while in motion, and making movement choices relative to a group of other dancers.
A typical two-hour master class includes: 1. A section of stretch and strength movements on the floor; 2. A standing warmup for muscles and joints; 3. Dance warmup exercises (plie, tendu, etc.) alternating with short, fast-footwork patterns in space, designed to make the initial mind-body connection; 4. Movement combinations in the center and traveling across and around the floor; 5. Movement "problems" such as repetition, slow motion, and movement silences, added to the linked combinations. This involves chance operations and choices by the individual dancer. When performed in groups, the result is delightfully choreographic. Dancers demonstrate that they know, and can manipulate, the material, can perform complicated sequences mindful of the other dancers in the space, and can make quick decisions regarding space and time. |
